In the wake of the Great Depression, new President Franklin D. Roosevelt, worked to institute a massive government-directed effort to revitalize the country. There were programs that gave people work on government projects (roads, dams, power plants, etc.), new laws on banks and the stock market, gold was confiscated, prohibition was repealed, price and wage were sometimes fixed, retirement "insurance" (Social Security) began and much more.
