In the wake of the Great Depression, new President [Franklin D Roosevelt|Franklin D. Roosevelt], worked to institute a massive government-directed effort to revitalize the country. There were programs that gave people work on government projects (roads, dams, power plants, etc.), new laws on banks and the stock market, [gold] was confiscated, prohibition was repealed, price and wage were sometimes fixed, retirement "insurance" ([Social Security]) began and much more.
