Charles A Halleck
Charles A. Halleck was a Republican leader in the House of Representatives for 10 of his 34 years as a Congressman from the state of Indiana (4 years as House Majority Leader and 6 years as House Minority Leader). He was a strong supporter of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, but highly opposed to the JFK and [[Lyndon B Johnson|LBJ]] social programs. == Speech Relevance == Halleck is quoted in [[Ronald Reagan Speaks Out Against Socialized Medicine]] as having said: <BLOCKQUOTE>''"When the American people want something from Congress, regardless of its political complexion, if they make their wants known, Congress does what the people want."''</BLOCKQUOTE> I am unable to track down any source for this quote besides the speech. == Source Links == [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Halleck|Charles Halleck ''(Wikipedia)'']
